What is your why? That’s a question that’s been asked of me several times over the years as I’ve been growing my business. It’s something that I’ve had difficult time answering. Often our Why gets confused with our What or our How, but today it finally clicked for me.
In the past several weeks I’ve had this recurring theme appear about my Why. The real reason I truly enjoy being an online business manager/virtual assistant.
Recently, my business coach Kathy Goughenour posted a quiz that helped discover our Brand Archetype. I have to admit that I love these types of quizzes. Especially those that focus on your strengths, your assets, what you do well. Or more importantly, what you don’t do well, giving you the opportunity to improve yourself. This quiz gave me a perspective on my business brand that I hadn’t thought of before. According to the Brand Archetype quiz I am a provocateur. The description for this Archetype states that the strengths of a provocateur are; Play, making jokes, joy, living in the moment, enjoying the fullness of life and experience, fostering innovation. When I first read the assessment I have to admit I was a little skeptical that it was accurate. I don’t see myself playing or making jokes during business, on the other hand I do enjoy the fullness of life and I live to ideate.
Today, I was at a networking event, and the topic up for discussion was; What is your Why? Again I had trouble defining my Why. I can easily discuss my What & my How, but What is my Why? During this event we were asked to turn to the person next to you and discuss your What, How and then your Why.
The person on my right happened to be Amy Latta, who is a life coach for women business owners. We spent time discussing our Whys. Both of us having a difficult time articulating the Why of our business.
One of the things that I kept coming back to was; I love to help businesses grow! I have a passion for helping another person grow their business. I love seeing
the end result and knowing I had a part in it. Amy’s response was why? I looked at her and said because it’s fun. She said that’s your why. And you know what she’s right! I work as a OBM/VA because it’s fun to grow a business! Both my own and my clients.
The description of the the provocateur is in direct alignment with my Why! The verbiage I might use is different, but the fact of the matter is that I love business and I love helping to grow other people’s business because I find it fun. AND I want my clients to have fun while growing their business.
I can give my clients the time to focus on the aspects of their business they enjoy. And because of this enjoyment their businesses GROW!
